…how old fuel can cause severe damage during prolonged periods of inactivity
Particularly in vehicles that are used infrequently, fuel can deteriorate quickly during prolonged periods of inactivity and cause problems. Rust, microbial contamination, or water in the tank can affect not only the tank itself but the entire fuel system, potentially compromising the vehicle’s readiness for use.
A striking example of this comes from Garage Schmidli in Zurich: the fuel tank of a Dodge was replaced in 2006. From the outside, the vehicle still appeared to be in excellent condition. However, inside, the tank, fuel lines, pump, carburettor, and fuel gauge sender were severely damaged and had to be replaced.
The reason: the vehicle had simply been left standing for too long. It is a clear example of how prolonged periods of inactivity can cause significant damage to the fuel system, even in vehicles that appear to be in perfect condition externally.
The coolant should not be overlooked either: old or unsuitable antifreeze can cause corrosion and expensive damage to components of the cooling system.
The Comparative Test
Garage Schmidli Zurich recently put our Bactofin to the test in a practical comparison with products from competing brands.
For the test, several containers were each filled with water, gasoline, a bare metal plate, and an aluminum rivet. One container was left untreated as a reference, while the others were treated with a Liqui Moly fuel stabilizer, Wynns Dry Fuel, and Bactofin.
After several months of storage, the results were clear. The differences between the individual test containers were clearly visible, demonstrating the impact that different additives can have on fuel storage and fuel condition.
